The time and place where we just met..." (Lennon/McCartney)
I have to agree with those immortal words of John Lennon and Paul McCartney, as having now had the phenomenal experience of seeing Paul McCartney perform live, I know that I will never forget it. The concert was, hands down, the best I have ever seen in my entire life (and I've seen some amazing shows!). I was driving home afterwards and I actually thought to myself, "If I were to be hit by a car right now, I would die completely happy and musically satisfied." :)
I'm not sure I have the words to describe the evening, it was just so magical in so many ways, but hopefully these photos help to convey some of the awesomeness of the experience we enjoyed.
Sir Paul was absolutely phenomenal - no opening act, three solid hours of performing, without a break - we didn't even see him take a sip of water! - 36 songs in total, including 2 encores. Some of the highlights included: sharing the excitement with my dear friend Heather,
songs sung in tribute to John Lennon ("Here Today") and George ("Something", with a ukulele),
huge fireworks at the front of the stage for "Live and Let Die",
Paul calling a lucky woman up on stage in response to her sign asking if he would autograph her arm if she promised not to sell it on eBay (I'm guessing she was planning to immediately visit an all night tattoo parlour to get that signature permanently engraved on said arm, I know I would have!!), the Jimi Hendrix tribute, the crowd sing-along for "Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da", Paul's sense of humour such as when he explained why they change guitars with almost every song ("we're just showing off"), seeing how many parents had brought their kids along to share the experience, and the Sergeant Pepper finale, with those perfectly fitting words: "And in the end, the love you take, is equal to the love you make."
But my absolute favourite part of the show was when they did "Mull of Kintyre" as the 2nd song of the 2nd encore. It started off with just Paul and the band but you know that part of the song where you can hear a bagpipe warming up? Right on cue, onto the stage walked 36 members of the Paris-Port Dover Pipe Band, who then began to play the bagpipes and drums for the song. I get goosebumps just writing it about, it was the most amazing thing I have ever seen.
According to this article describing how the band came to be chosen to perform with the legendary Wings frontman and their top secret preparations that enabled them to surprise the audience the way they did, Paul only performs this song in Canada and the United Kingdom.
