Crocheting With Wire

My friend Taylor was asking me about crocheted necklaces the other day, she didn't realize that you could crochet with wire.  I'm here to tell you that you can and I know this because I learned from the best, none other than one of Swarovski's own Crystal Ambassadors, Ms. Stephanie Dixon.  Also known as The Dixon Chick.

Here are a couple of photos of a necklace I made a while back using black artistic wire and an assortment of beads.

Here's what it looks like close up.

It's a very pretty look, wouldn't you agree?

Here's a photo of a necklace I made for a commission this week.  Also a black and white design but made with silver wire, creating a totally different effect.

Another Face

Here's another face I drew for the Supplies Me online class I am taking with Jane Davenport.

This one was drawn with coloured pencils. Prismacolor pencils to be exact (I have the box with 36 colours).  Jane was teaching us how to blend the colours.  The right side is blended, the left is not.

I used Tim Holtz's Spun Sugar Distress Stain for the background (the light pink colour) and I must say, I wasn't too excited about the way the product worked on this page but that's okay.  The outside edge of the picture, the frame, was drawn with Neo-color watersoluble wax pastels and then I brushed them with water to blend the colours.

This week, we're learning about shading. Haven't done my homework yet, it's been a busy week so far but that's the beauty of online classes, no marks off if you're late handing in your homework.  In fact, no grades at all.  Just fun learning.  Gotta love that.

Helpful Cats

When I showed you this drawing last week, I neglected to mention that I had a little help from the Kitten Caboodle when I was making it.

Did you know that cats can be very helpful when one is making art? After checking out all the options

they will help you choose just the right coloured pencil:

although there may be a difference of opinion over which pencil:

and heaven knows, I shouldn't have to pick out punchinella all by myself:

Some cats might also wish to help with administrative duties, such as packaging:

and order processing:

Then again, when you've got 3 assistants on the go already, it helps when number 4 decides to keep out of the fray:

Words To Live By

Saw these words on a storefront window along Bloor Street West last week and was totally amazed.  How come all storefronts don't encourage us like this? Not sure what they were selling in there but I certainly appreciated the sentiment!

Stenciling with Julie Balzer

My friend Libelhina asked me which of Julie Balzer's stencils I bought on the weekend.  Strangely enough, stencils are one of the few art supplies I didn't have in my arsenal until recently but I've been coveting them for a long time.  I took Julie's class on Saturday and thought, wow, I love these things, I need more!  And after taking her class, I have a better idea how to use them, which is also important.

So, Libby, to answer your question, here are the ones I bought:

- the 6x6 inch "Leaf Frame":

I used the 12x 12 inch size to make this design (hmm, maybe I should have bought both sizes?):

I also bought the "Wonky Circles" design in the 12x12 size, shown here in the background with the leaf frame over top:

My absolute favourite is the "Flower Frame", I love, love, love it, had to have it!  Here's how Julie's stencil looked after we used it all day in class:

and here's how I used it on one of my journal pages:

As it happens, Julie's blog entry today is the first in a series she is calling "Stencil-a-Palooza". Not only is she going to show us the eighteen stencils she designed for The Crafters Workshop.com, she is showing various techniques and ideas for actually using the stencils and giving away freebies!  I just know you're going to want to click here and go check it out.  Today's blog features the "Trust Your Heart" stencil, which I also used (see below) and loved but didn't buy (yes, I have entered to win it from Julie!):

Fun with Julie Balzer

I'm still recovering (in a good way, with my mind whirling with lots of creative ideas) from yesterday's "Stamped and Stencilled Pocket Book" class with Julie Balzer at Bizzy B.
Julie using the world's quietest heat gun (made by Ranger)
She showed us how to make a folded book made out of several pages of watercolour paper that we first decorated with various art supplies, including Julie's very own stencil designs (her designs are being carried by The Crafters Workshop, you can see them all here. They come in both 12 x 12 inch sizes and a smaller 6 inch size and of course, you can find them at Bizzy B, although I'm sure they'll have to re-stock after this weekend, we each went home with several!).

We layered lots of goodies on our pages, using gesso, paint, ink and stamps and Adirondack color washes in assorted shades.  The really cool thing about these washes is that we could spray them on the stencil to create a design, paint over them with a wet brush and while the stencil design would remain, we would also get a wash of colour (which you can control by the amount of water you add). It made for a really neat effect, as you can see here on one of my pages in the early stage of its creation:

And here's Anne with a foot shape she made (by accident) by adding just a little bit of water to a stencilled page:

We also used foam stamps from Claudine Hellmuth's Studio line, including this shape from the "Bloom" collection that I absolutely fell in love with, as shown on a page made by one of my tablemates, Susan, that I thought was pretty awesome:

Julie is a lot of fun as a teacher.  She told us right at the beginning of class that she only had two rules:  (1) that we had to be comfortable with swearing because, as she said, she swears like a sailor, and (2) we could do whatever the f*@& we wanted!  She also explained that we were going to be using some messy techniques so anyone that liked to work very carefully and precisely would need to learn to let go of some of that control (luckily, the supply list provided before class had suggested we bring an apron!).  Some people had a little trouble with that concept at first but everyone quickly got the hang of things and the end results were pretty awesome.

One of the most amazing things that I learned and one that really surprised me is that Julie doesn't clean her stencils . They started out all clean and white, like this:

and by the end of the day, they looked like this:

Clearly, the woman knows what she is talking about, because I loved the effects that we got from using a stencil that was still wet from a previous use.  It creates a really cool and often distressed looking result and you get some unusual mixes of colours that you would not otherwise achieve.

Another thing that I really liked was the fact that we actually finished the project by the end of the class.  I am one of those people that works slower and as a result, I have several unfinished projects from various classes that didn't get done at the time that I just haven't gone back to, which is a darned shame.  But in this class, I think all of us were going home with a finished book, or at least one that was assembled.  There is lots more that could be added to the pages themselves and that's the whole idea.  Julie designed this book to be a travel journal, with pockets for saving ticket stubs, pamphlets and souvenirs from a trip, and lots of space for writing and adding photos.

Here are a couple more pictures of the book I made:

Many thanks to Julie for such a fun and interesting class and to our hosts, Barb (who put on her wobbly headband and gave out candy as well as making sure our day ran smoothly and we had everything we needed)

and Tony (who very kindly hung the rope so we could hang our pages to dry on the "clothesline" and provided us with a delicious lunch of sandwiches, salad and yummy desserts) of Bizzy B.

Balzer at Bizzy B

I had a wonderful day today at Bizzy B, taking an all day class with Julie Fei-Fan Balzer of Balzer Designs.  We made what is called a stamped and stencilled pocket book. It was one of those days that is totally exhausting and exhilarating at the same time, which means I've got lots to tell you about it and tons of photos to show but I'm just too darned tired to write about it tonight, so stay tuned for tomorrow and all will be revealed.

In the meantime, here's a few photos from our day:
