Happy Simcoe Day!

Here in Canada, most of us are celebrating a holiday today, which means we don't have to go to work on this first Monday of August. The day itself is called different things across the country. The funny thing is, even though here in Ontario, this day has been known as Simcoe Day since 1968, in honour of John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Upper Canada (as Ontario was known a couple of centuries ago), most people don't know that. It's more commonly known as the August Civic Holiday. It all started in Toronto in the late 1800's. Apparently the city council thought we could all use another day of relaxation in the middle of summer. Hear, hear!
