Found beauty in pain.

Frida as a young girl, photographed by her father, Guillermo Kahlo |
I was so glad to have had a chance to visit the home where Frida Kahlo lived when I visited Mexico City last month.

Her artwork is so interesting and even more so when you realize the kind of chronic pain she lived with all her adult life, after being involved in a serious accident as a teenager. When she was eighteen, the bus she was riding in collided with a trolley car and she was left with a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis, eleven fractures in her right leg, a crushed and dislocated right foot, and a dislocated shoulder. In addition, an iron handrail pierced her abdomen and her uterus, leaving her unable to have children. (Source:

Stay tuned, next week I'll be sharing more details and photos of my visit to the blue house known as La Casa Azul!

For years I had a portrait of Frida hanging on my wall. I would tell myself that if she could endure what she did, then I surely could endure what I had to. She is one of my heroes and she got me through some very hard times. How amazing that you were able to visit her house! This is something I have longed to do. I will be so pleased to visit vicariously through you! Thank you Cynthia for this post and for your meaningful haiku!
Inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
what a life, what a woman. You are lucky to have seen her place.
An admirable woman. Thank you for this tribute to Frida.
a kindred spirit that has inspired me since i was quite young and stood beside her bed. i was able to bend my body over her bed and find my reflection in the mirror over her bed her father placed so she could paint away those bed bound months. he gave her whole worlds to explore when she was confined to the edges of a small lonely bed.this was long before i was to discover i too would find painting as a gorgeous world to explore when the boundaries of my physical body would let themselves be forever known. thanks for your offering to courage and inspiration.
